Announcing Our 2020 Capital Project
Each year at this time we announce a yearlong Capital Campaign for completion of a specific project for our Home which directly relates to the health or safety of our Residents. This year will be no exception. Despite our extensive strategic and proactive maintenance of our Home, certain systems are in fact 50-years old. There comes a point when preventative maintenance and strategic repair simply no longer provide the safety and reliability standards we require for our Residents.
For our 2020 Capital Campaign, we are announcing the replacement of the corroded and, otherwise damaged, sections of the original and existing hot water iron pipes being used in our heating system, and replacing these sections with state-of-the-art-black heat piping. Our existing piping is composed of iron which has developed various weak spots in the system due to its age. These weak spots jeopardize the entire heating system. The project is quite extensive. It will involve the removal and replacement of an estimated 1,500 feet of very large steel intake and distribution pipes in the basement.
Please be assured that this was not a snap decision on our part especially with all the issues we have had to contend with during the pandemic. For the last several years, we have had numerous engineering studies done on the system, including the use of a fluoroscope to examine the interior of the existing piping system. The conclusion was reached that repair was not an efficient option and that replacement of damaged pipe sections, although costly, would provide our Home with the optimum protection for our Residents in the winter and the best return on our investment.
After a careful bidding process, we have selected a fully-licensed and insured contractor who can complete the project for $238,000. As you can imagine, the project is labor intensive, heavy on regulatory permits, supplies, architectural and technical expertise and must be fully inspected by the New York City Departments of Health, Buildings, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
We know how difficult times are. All we can do is humbly ask you to consider supporting this project as your personal circumstances allow. Prayers are always encouraged and welcomed as well. Every dollar collected for this Capital Campaign will be held in a separate account and only dispersed as progress on the project occurs.
Be assured that we will actively pursue all other available grant opportunities for which we may qualify, to assist in the funding of this Capital Project and we will keep you posted as to the progress we are making to achieve this capital project.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration.
