Welcome Mother General Maria del Monte Auxiliadora!
Mother General arrived at Queen of Peace last evening to a joyous welcome, complete with ringing bells, from the Sisters, Residents, Associates and Staff who met her at the front entrance walkway to our Home. The weather was very cooperative for an outdoor greeting. Mother General arrived with Mother Assistant Joseph Christine. Our Home was beautifully decorated with American, French, Scottish, and Spanish flags to represent their heritages. We have been preparing for Mother General’s visit and you could feel the excitement building as Mother General’s time for arriving came closer.
Once inside the lobby Mother General met with more Sisters and Residents. In addition, both Mother General and Mother Assistant received beautiful bouquets of roses to commemorate their arrival to our Home. Mother General receive a special welcome from our dear Resident Marie Kasis who welcomed her in French. The welcome in English was provided by our dear Dorothy (“Aunt Dot”) Kenna. In addition, a poem was read to Mother General by Angella Chambers, a most dedicated member of our Staff. To top off the welcome was a flawless harmonica performance by our own dear Resident, Willie Pleau.
Mother General’s opening remarks were most gracious and inspiring. She has a warm and welcoming personality coupled with a good sense of humor. We look forward to spending an extraordinary week with her.
Today, we have a special Mass of Thanksgiving in our Chapel to be celebrated by Bishop Chappetto, who is a dear friend of the Little Sisters. After lunch, Mother General and Mother Assistant will be treated to a performance from our Sisters, Residents and Staff in the auditorium, which will highlight the history of New York City, the diversity of talent at Queen of Peace Residence and retell the founding of the Little Sisters arrival in Brooklyn over 150 years ago.
